SKEPTIC'S TOOLBOX 2008
Your Wonderful Brain

The brain and its wonders were central to the interests of both Jerry Andrus and Barry Beyerstein. In his magic and other presentations, Jerry emphasized that, "We often come to the wrong conclusion for the right reason." The point was that the very same processes that enable our brain to be so dramatically successful are frequently the same ones that lead us into error. Although many cognitive errors and illusions occur when the brain is functioning normally, some of the more dramatic errors and anomalies of experience result from the malfunctioning brain. Barry focused on how epilepsy, drugs, damage, and stresses caused the brain to function in ways that lead people to believethey have experienced or witnessed something supernatural or paranormal.
Toolbox 2008 will deal with ways in which the normally and the abnormally functioning brain can lead us astray and create cognitive illusions. According to many contemporary neuroscientists, perhaps the most fundamental illusion is that of free-will. Our workshop will try to make sense of this very puzzling issue. We hope that by dealing with Your Wonderful Brainwe will be continuing in the spirit of our two recently deceased colleagues.
The Masters Challenge
At the dawn of the new millennium Herb Masters, a veteran of the Skeptics' Toolbox, issued a challenge to fellow skeptics. The challenge was simple: bring a friend to the Toolbox, or sponsor a student to attend. Help raise awareness of skepticism by introducing new people to the benefits of critical thinking towards paranormal and pseudoscientific claims. In his own words, Herb Masters, explains:
Since issuing the Masters Challenge in 2001, The Skeptic's Toolbox has welcomed many new participants. Several attendees have been provided scholarships through CSI, local community groups, and many generous individuals. Newcomers have been sponsored through complimentary tuition or help with traveling expenses and accommodations. Most notably, people attending through the Masters Challenge have returned year after year. |
